What is PCP, exactly? While developed during the 50’s to be used as anesthesia, phencyclidine, or PCP, has never made it to the market for human use. Due to the erratic side effects, it was deemed illegal. Now going by such street names as angel dust, rocket fuel, and wack, PCP is sold as an illicit substance, and a very dangerous one at that.

Effects of PCP

People who use PCP experience different sensations. Most commonly, users experience a disassociation of time and space from where and when they are at the current moment. Panic attacks is one of the most frequently experienced disorders in the world. It is estimated that 4 or 5  out of a hundred people are severely affected by it, in one way or another. Because of panic attacks, a casual mood can turn into an eye-popping, jittery, can’t sit-still-on-the-chair mood, like what a husband feels when he’s eagerly waiting for his wife to give birth to their child.

The same is true with panic. A “little” panic can serve as a form of defense. But being engulfed with excessive panic may hinder you from performing your normal activities and may deter you to take action especially on not-so-common activities.

Panic Attacks and Depression - You Shouldn’t Have to Suffer

Today depression and panic attacks a very common for millions of people around the world. Oxycodone Abuse & Addiction & Side Effects & Testing

Oxycodone is a prescription drug that acts as a depressant of the central nervous system. It is a narcotic, much like Vicodin and morphine and is used to treat moderate to severe pain like that caused by fractures, arthritis, childbirth and serious diseases like Cancer

Overcoming Depression with a Child’s Heart

Although this is no way is a pro-Jackson article, this is actually an excerpt from a personal Jackson 5 favorite entitled ‘With a Child’s Heart’

Sung by a pre-adolescent Michael Jackson, the words of this song made such an impact on me most recently when I played the CD a few days back.

The lyrics of the song reminded me of what the renowned psychologist: Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, once stated in his book- that children are indeed the group of humans who ironically are most gifted in the art of faith and positive thinking.

These are two essentials for overcoming depression, and it is no co-incidence that they are abundant in a child’s heart.

Children are more expert in happiness and faith than adults and indeed the adult who can carry the spirit of a child into middle and old age is truly a genius. Why?
Well this is quite simply because such an adult will preserve the happy and carefree spirit that only the young seem to be endowed with and this of course will be vital and necessary for dealing with depression and problems and keeping their effects on us minimized.

The subtlety and wisdom of Jesus Christ is truly remarkable.
When it comes to dealing with depression (or dealing with life, period-the good and the bad of it), He suggests that one should have a childlike heart and mind.

In other words, have you ever noticed how a kid believes mom’s kiss actually made the pain of a bicycle fall go away, well that same childlike faith is actually what God requires of us in believing that what He says He’ll do for us will come to pass.


Now, in regards to overcoming depression, it is clear to see that approaching our problems with a childlike yet powerful faith that things will be better would make a huge difference in our situations and circumstances.

This doesn’t mean that no work will be required of us on our part, remember
“faith without works is dead," (James 2:26). However, it is the believing that what we are doing to make things better in addition to trusting what God says about our situations and challenges that would make the difference.

Just like a child will ask a parent for help on how to do something and totally rely on the parent’s instruction to get it done, it is very much the same way that we have to accept and follow God’s advice and help in order to deal with our problems and challenges in life.

A young Jackson ends the song above soulfully stating that
“With a child’s heart, nothing is gonna get me down!”
Indeed with the childlike faith in God and His promises and a childlike obedience to do as instructed by a wiser Being, nothing: not depression, not life’s problems can get us down.

Overcoming Depression through Faith

Let’s face it, we all get depressed at times, it is only being human. However, as with all things, when it becomes excessive, depression, characterized by erratic mood swings, loss of interest in hobbies and a generally sad demeanor is very detrimental to our overall health.

As damaging as it is to our general well being, it is quite alarming that most of us do suffer from this ailment and it is even more frightening that many people have been diagnosed as being clinically depressed. Is there hope? Most of us might ask.

Yes, there is.

It is summed up in one word; Faith.

And what is Faith?

Well, According to Heb 11. 1; "It is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not yet seen", in lay man's terms, it is believing in what you can't necessarily see, feel or touch but knowing that it is there and will be beneficial for you.

Take for example; remember when you may have fallen of your bike as a kid and after your mom nursed the bruise she tells you "let me kiss it so the pain goes away..."?
Well as adults, we know that didn't necessarily make the hurting stop...per se, but in being told that, as kids we automatically believed "Well, if mommy says it'll go away by kissing it, then I believe it will...” The trick is the second part of that thought is what made it happen! Believing that what mom said she'd bring about will happen!

Evidently, kids in their innocence and supposed naïveté really are the group of humans who possess the most natural ability to abide by faith. We all had this gift at some point but, well, as we age and experience trying times in our lives, sadly the magic dissipates, leaving room for such negative forces as depression, doubt, self-hatred, you name it.

It's no wonder Jesus said "To enter the Kingdom of heaven, ye must be like little children..."
The same Man went on to say in Luke 17:20-21: "The kingdom of Heaven is within you"

Wow...what a statement!

The author of “The Power of Positive Thinking” Dr. Norman Vincent Peale analyzed this verse and states that it means "We as humans, the images of God, have everything within us to make our worlds and lives better and all we want it to be!” Hey, it's no error that Psalm 82:6 says: "For ye are gods..."

Now as powerful as faith is and as necessary as it is to overcoming depression, it needs to be exercised wisely to be strengthened.

Here are some tips:

1. Always act like it is impossible to fail, believe that it always works.

2. Pre-condition your mind to success in all things.
 
3. Try, really try! Think, really think! Believe, really believe!

You are what you are and will be where you want to be based on your thoughts.

Admittedly, it may not always be easy, but that is what life is all about and one comforting fact is God has promised in His word, 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No temptation (problem) has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted (tested) beyond what you are able, but with the temptation (problem) will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

Think on that, strengthen your faith with the tips above and you too will soon be overcoming depression.


Overcoming Depression: The Power of Positive thinking works

Friends: “Above all else, guard you heart for it’s the well-spring of life”

I remember telling an associate this quote once and his response (this from a ‘straight out the tough streets of Chicago’ guy) was: “That is deep…!”

He was going through a depressing situation of his life and was discussing it with me, we talked about methods of overcoming depression and I thought of that verse. Yes, folks it’s a verse from the Bible, and it is one of the most powerful ones that can be affirmed or repeated for overcoming depression through one’s thoughts.

With the several side-effects associated with synthetic drugs for treating depression, it is quite necessary to say seeking alternative methods of depression treatment will be more than adequate and wise for overcoming depression. One of these alternatives is changing one’s thinking (and speaking) habits about life and its challenges.

As its name suggests, positive thinking is a habit of accepting first that there are problems and challenges we may be facing, but in order to overcome them to avoid the inevitable depression that may result, we must think with the mind-frame of success and victory in mind. When using this for overcoming depression and our challenges, it involves forcefully saturating our minds with positive thoughts and affirmations in the aim of overshadowing the negative pessimistic thoughts about the depressing situations.

Always seek the good out of every situation and this at times may require some real action on our parts. Analyze the problems, ask why it may be happening, what you may have done to provoke or not prevent it from occurring, your options of being able to fix it and who you may have to turn to for help.

Seeking spiritual guidance and help while using positive thinking for overcoming depression, is also a great suggestion. As overlooked as the Bible may be in the present ages (or religion/spirituality period), it does contain a lot of helpful affirmations one can repeat mantra-like in thoughts and speech and with the right attitude, you almost inevitably find the answer to your problems. Is this quackery or magic? No. Your thinking process creates your world. Remember: “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he…”

Other things to keep in mind when using positive thinking for overcoming depression are to employ the proven methods of a proper diet and exercise to create a healthy body and consequently a clearer and healthier mind which will be more capable as a consequence for overcoming depression.

Will positive thinking always work? It will be safe to say, like with anything else, you will only get out of it what you put into it. However, with the right attitude and mind-frame, it sure will beat overcoming depression through a bunch of harmful drugs.
Do keep in mind though, it is the first step (thinking right that is) to solving a problem. Moreover, as far as problems in life remember in the words of Charles de Gaulle: "Difficulties attracts the man of character because it is in embracing it that he realizes himself!"

Life’s problems should act as spur for action not running away from them. Considering this, positive thinking obviously is the first step to ensuring that you make the right move for overcoming depression and challenges in life.

Overcome Your Anxiety

Everybody at one point experiences anxiety when faced with a stressful or worrying situation. Anxiety is the feeling of fear, apprehension and worry, accompanied by nausea, palpitations, chest pain, and breathlessness. Sometimes this can interfere with your normal life. Excessive anxiety can be linked with other psychiatric conditions, such as depression.

Anxiety can be in many forms. It may be a fear of snakes, a fear of heights or stage fright, or it could also be nonstop worry about your parenting skills or constant fretting about success at work, etc.

Components:

Anxiety is said to have four components:

Cognitive components: This imposes fear of uncertain danger.

Somatic components: When faced with a frightening situation your blood pressure and heart rate are increased, you tend to sweat, and blood flow to the major muscle groups is increased. The somatic signs of anxiety might include pale skin, sweating, trembling, and pupil dilation.

Emotional components: The emotional components of anxiety cause a sense of dread or panic, nausea, and chills.

Behavioral components: This would lead to both voluntary and involuntary behaviors, and you maybe directed at avoiding the source of anxiety which is quite common.

Types of Anxiety and the symptoms:

There are various types of anxiety - Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Anxiety and specific phobias. Anxiety Disorder is very common throughout the world. It is a chronically recurring case of anxiety that can seriously affect your life. People with this disorder feel afraid of something but are unable to articulate the specific fear. If you are constantly worrying, and have a hard time controlling your worries then you might be suffering from anxiety disorder.

Some of the common symptoms of anxiety disorder are:

• Muscle tension
• Heart palpitations
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Shortness of breath
• Sweating
• Nausea
• Cold hands
• Jumpiness
• Difficulty falling asleep
• Hot flashes or chills
• Diarrhea and irritated bowel syndrome

Anxiety can make you cranky and irritable. You may get tired easily and often suffer from insomnia. It is very important that you seek professional medical help. This helps you to become more confident about managing fear and anxiety and also prepares you to face any kind of inducing situations.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy: This is the most popular and effective type of psychotherapy to overcome your anxiety. The goal is to understand your thinking process and help you to develop coping skills before your anxiety takes over. This helps you:

• Challenge false or self-defeating beliefs
• Think positive

Psychodynamic psychotherapy: This therapy helps those who have fear because of unconscious mental conflict. You are made to uncover the conflict as a means to stop the fear-causing anxiety and panic.

Alternative therapies: Different therapies have been developed for treating anxiety, like EMDR - a therapy that utilizes rapid eye movement, repetitive sounds and tapping to reintegrate an “out of sync” brain. Even acupuncture is being used to treat anxiety.

All these therapies depend on various subjective factors, such as therapist competence. It is advisable to go to only a well known and experienced psychotherapist. Self help and relaxation techniques also play an important role in relieving anxiety symptoms. Improving your eating habits and reduction in caffeine and sugar intake also helps. Exercise and a relaxation technique such as yoga, is also very helpful. Try to reach out to your friends and family and share your troubles; do not let it get accumulated before it hits you hard. Anxiety is very common and you are not the only one, so don't hesitate to seek help.

Over Compulsive Disorder - The Odd Ball Driven To Despair

Over compulsive disorder affects people in many different ways - at least 2% of the population are being driven to despair trying to cope with this disorder. The symptoms differ for each individual - some more so than others where severity of the condition has encouraged a patient to become a hostage to their own thoughts.

No Matter how rebellious a sufferer is when trying to fight and control their actions and thoughts - they sometimes find it easier to let those intrusive obscene thoughts continue and suffer in silence. Repetitive compulsions have to be carried out by a sufferer to find solace.

Daily duties and rituals performed by an over compulsive disorder sufferer is often seen by the outsider as odd. Strange behaviour patterns from a person suffering from OCD will never be understood by the sane outsider as they see themselves next to an oddball.
Behaviour patterns of an obsessive-compulsive disorder victim can cause so much havoc and misery in that person`s life - to an extent when they feel they can not go on and in some cases that has been the case where suicide was the only way out.

Over compulsive disorder can instigate a flare up of depression where sufferers experience anxious moments if their compulsions or repetitive actions are prevented from being performed. When OCD begins to meddle with your everyday activities then it is time to seek help because it is now turning serious affecting how you live your life.

Doctors dedicated to this mind meddling disorder once believed that OCD was a condition rarely heard of - but in fact it is now becoming more common than other mind or mental ailments - namely bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It is said that in the US there are over 3 million people suffering from over-compulsive disorder. Parents should be aware that children can also be affected by OCD so if you notice any unusual change in your child`s ways then talk to a doctor. This disorder is known to stem from childhood.

Do not be alarmed at the fact that there is no known cure for this complaint because there are remedies to help control the symptoms that are slowly tearing your world apart. Treatment is available also medical advice to treat your nonsensical behaviours - but as senseless as these behaviours may seem it is still a difficult task to liberate your self from them alone.

Medical staff show uncertainty to the reasons behind and exact cause of OCD. Research says the cause is biological, while others beg to differ believing this disorder is a learned behaviour. Facts state that the chances are increased of you developing over compulsive disorder if a close relative or family member be a victim. However, it has not been proven or identified by researchers that genes are guilty to this being a hand me down illness.

Consult your doctor if you or a member of the family is showing signs of this disorder or any other illness - by not talking to someone can only add more pain and suffering.


Over Compulsive Disorder - OCD I Cry Alone

To gain control of our actions first we need to face up to the OCD and believe in ourselves that we can fight this fight single handed if need be. I say single handed purely because this battle is one sided (between you and you). Medication is readily available to combat and ease the symptoms but for results you have to work hand in hand with prescribed medicines and listen to medical advisors. This has proven to be successful for many of our fellow sufferers of over compulsive disorder(OCD)

 Patients in desperation who take a stand and decide enough is enough, go on to  topple this illness thus claiming contentment after liberation. The cure is out there whether you opt to take it is another matter, freedom beats being a prisoner inside of your own thoughts where mind over matter, matters.
All patients differ where in some cases symptoms are more severe than that of others. There is no need to try and beat this alone, yes I did mention this was between you and you, but where is the harm in having a little support behind you. 

The cause behind many a sufferer's OCD remains a mystery, regardless of not knowing why and how it all started the sufferer continues to carry on with their repetitive compulsions in return for peace of mind.
A combination of factors have been addressed which could probably be the cause, it has not been ruled out that in some cases it is hereditary. More prone to OCD are people who are susceptible to stress. Perfectionists also come under threat from developing this disorder.

In America approx one in 50 adults currently suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) double that number for the amount of people who in the past at some point been gripped by this self destroying illness.

The cry of pain and agony from a cut finger/broken arm is healed with a bandaid plaster cast and sling. Our headache pains are relieved after a pill popping session.

How on earth can we expect people close to our hearts suffer too? How does the saying go, you always hurt the one you love. If this is the case then let me put my arms around the whole world because today I am loving everyone.

A suicidal road is structured out for all victims of this is a self destruction disease believe me. Ask yourself how hard it must be for the family to stand back watching helplessly as we struggle to meet the demands from those little voices in our heads.

Who are the real victims here I ask? Does an OCD victim care how they are making others lives a misery? Yes of course we do but it is out of hands to put the family feelings first.

Rules are rules that have to be abided by and if broken the OCD victim sees this as treachery Punishment is in order for the betrayer where a parting of the ways is put in to force. In the eyes of an OCD victim there is no animosity spared if the partner leaves. Some would see it as less chores more contentment. A contented lonely life ahead, but I am afraid that is the way it goes.

If choosing between a clean sweep (Excuse the pun) and clean break, then say your goodbyes.

OCD - Dont Look Back in ANGER

How is it that an OCD sufferer can never leave a room or walk through a door without looking back?

Why do we fight the urge to look back? Well let me tell you? It is because we find ourselves going back to fluff up the cushions,  god only knows how many times  the doors are checked  to see if they are locked before retiring to bed, that trickle of glistening water on the draining board needs to be wiped. No matter how tired we are someone has to straighten the rug or dust the television. Whatever it takes for peace of mind an OCD victim will do it.
 
Actions of an over OCD sufferer is very similar to that of Feng Shui followers, where prosperity energy and good luck comes to those if objects/furniture is placed in the right location. Our daily habits are duplicated in a similar manner only we do not seek prosperity and luck it is that of peace and contentment.

Now what’s really important?

I happened to be talking to my local politician before Christmas because a fine website on depression, www.DepressioNet.com.au was about to lose funding for its crucial 24 hour support forums as a result of failure by the Australian government to fund its programs.

So I pinged the pollies and Bill, my local politician, wanted to chat. The one illuminating aspect of our 45 minute conversation was that it was very hard (for politicians) to decide what other health programs should be cut in order to increase funding for mental health because of myriad vested interests.

Watching news reports around the world and back home I see similar difficulties arising. It is somewhat reminiscent of the ‘Yes Minister’ dilemmas that Sir Humphrey Appleby would put to his boss, thereby stymieing him every time.

Just last week in South Australia an identical furore erupted. There, the government was brave (or hassled) enough to announce increased mental health funding. The opposition was equally mean enough to demand to know what (more highly valued) general health programs were to be sacrificed for the increase. Read the report here:

Now to get back to Yes Minister, Jim Hacker in his early days would have said ‘But we should just fund health needs according to the cost to the community, the individual and the carer. And that should be the minimum amount needed to restore the ill person’s health so as to function in relationships, at work and in the community.’ You wish!

The unfairness is obvious when authoritative reports state: ‘Stigma is systemic in decision-making at the highest political levels. Ultimate responsibility for mental health services lies with government leaders at Federal and State levels.

‘It is they who have ensured these services have had such a low priority in policy-making and funding…

A report by Access Economics for SANE Australia in 2003 calculated the costs of bipolar in Australia as being ‘$16,000 on average’ per year for each sufferer. Yet spending is ‘only $3,007 per person.’

It gets worse. The report states that this paltry $3,007 is even less than spending on the average Australian’s health care, even though ‘the burden of disease – the pain, suffering, disability and death – is greater for bipolar disorder than for ovarian cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or HIV/AIDs, and similar to schizophrenia and melanoma.’

And who makes up the shortfall? According to the report, ‘around half (i.e. $8,000) of this cost is borne by people with the illness and their carers.’

‘Mentally healthy’ public outnumber the mentally ill by a factor of 4 to 1. They want their subsidized spas and perfect teeth at the expense of us getting into hospital when we need it! But because they still view the behaviors of mental illness as not symptoms but as plain bad behavior, our health needs are viewed as less deserving than theirs, and funded accordingly.

Because of the ‘Yes Minister’ factor, I think we face an uphill battle persuading the politicians. They won’t shift until public opinion does, to say nothing of favors and kickbacks.

The 4 people in 5 who don’t have a mental illness have something much worse—prejudice. They are the ones who need persuading that mental health deserves equitable funding.

Some people get depressed and have a difficult time getting out of bed in the mornings. When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do to get their mind off of the problem. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things. Doing something will get your mind off of the problem and give you confidence to do other things.

Seek help from God. You might of heard this before, however have you tried asking God for help? Praying and talking to God about your problem can be effective. Typically, people suffering from Narcolepsy and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness need to have a period of sleep before attempting and specific task. Failing to prepare in this manner can result in a sudden attack of sleep while performing said task. EDS is regularly treated with stimulants, such as Ritalin, in America. This drug helps to stimulate the central nervous system to keep the individual alert and awake. Other newer drugs are in development that work as similar ‘wake promoters’. The second main characteristic of narcolepsy is cataplexy, the sudden loss of control over the muscles in your body. This can vary in severity from individual to individual, and most good doctors suggest that if the symptoms are not severe enough, treatment should simply be avoided. The drugs commonly used to treat this problem are those in the antidepressant range. Cataplexy is not directly linked to depression, but the side effects of these drugs happen to affect the neurological pathways that themselves cause cataplexy. These drugs are usually either tricyclic agents, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, SSRIs. Paralysis during sleep and hallucinations can also be left without treatment from drugs unless they are particularly severe or extreme. As they typically only occur during the night, they cause less of a problem to the sufferer. Regardless, the treatments for cataplexy will usually also reduce the severity of these two auxiliary symptoms. Strong advice comes from other sufferers of narcolepsy – take naps! There is good clinical evidence that taking some frequent naps during the day will help offset the symptoms of EDS and cataplexy. Many claim that simply sleeping for a few minutes at a time before performing a task can guard against a sleep attack happening during that task.

My Battle with Bipolar Disorder

Since my early twenties, I have suffered from bipolar disorder. I am now in my mid-forties and have managed to keep it under control through the use of medications as well as the support of my friends, family and my wonderful and compassionate husband. Unfortunately, it took a long time to get to the point I am at now. For many years, I suffered through the challenges of trying to lead a productive and functional life despite being plagued by the imbalances brought on by my condition. During this time, I was unable to seek proper treatment because I was unaware that I had bipolar disorder. I had been diagnosed with depression by more than one doctor and the medications I was given did little to help my overall condition. My periods of depression were followed by brief stretches of manic behavior, some more intense than others. I always assumed these were the ups and downs of life. During my periods of depression, which also varied in length and intensity, I often found it difficult to go to work. I was unable to concentrate as the feelings of despair were so overwhelming at times that on some days I never made it out of bed. During my manic times, I often felt that anything was possible. 
While my outlook was positive during these episodes, I was often irritable and hard to deal with. My euphoria was sometimes followed by periods of normalcy, though I would eventually slip back into depression. During a particularly long battle with depression for which I had to be hospitalized, I was finally properly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Just being aware of what had been taking place inside of me helped me to understand some of the problems I was experiencing. I was placed on a series of medications designed to manage my condition and through counseling, learned to anticipate the onset of episodes and maintain rational thinking throughout. Although I must constantly be aware of my condition, I now lead a functional and satisfying life which I enjoy. Thankfully, today there are many sources of information on bipolar disorder and the medical community is much more cognizant of it's existence.
